Caracanthus typicus, the Hawaiian orbicular velvetfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, an orbicular velvetfish, belonging to the family Scorpaenidae. This species is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Taxonomy Caracanthus typicus was first formally described in 1845 by the Danish zoologist Henrik Nikolai Krøyer with the type locality given as the Hawaiian Islands.

Caracanthus es un género de peces de la familia Caracanthidae, del orden Scorpaeniformes. Este género marino fue descrito por primera vez en 1845 por Henrik Nikolaj Krøyer. Antes encuadrado en la familia monotípica Caracanthidae, en la actualidad se considera ésta como subfamilia Caracanthinae Gill, 1885 dentro de los escorpaénidos.
