Orinoco Matamata

La Matamata (Chelus fimbriata ou Chelus fimbriatus), un des deux représentants du genre Chelus, est une espèce de tortues, de la famille des Chelidae. C'est une tortue d'eau douce à l'aspect original par rapport aux autres espèces de son ordre, ce qui a suscité la curiosité de nombreux scientifiques. Elle se répartit globalement en Amérique du Sud, notamment dans le bassin amazonien, alors que sa proche cousine, Chelus orinocensis, fréquente les bassins de l'Orénoque et du Río Negro.

Chelus orinocensis, the Orinoco mata mata, is a species of freshwater turtle found in northern South America in the Orinoco, upper Rio Negro–Branco and Essequibo basins, and in Trinidad. It was split off from the very similar Chelus fimbriata in 2020. Taxonomy A genetic analysis of the mata mata was reported in 2020, which showed a deep split between two of its populations.
