Merian's Orchid Bee

Vanilla pompona, le vanillon, est une espèce de plantes à fleurs monocotylédones de la famille des Orchidaceae, originaire des régions tropicales des Amériques. Ce sont des lianes épiphytes vivaces, de grande taille, aux racines aériennes et aux grandes fleurs jaune-vert. L'espèce, dont l'habitat naturel est restreint et fragmenté, est classé comme étant « en danger » par l'UICN.

Eulaema meriana, also known as Merian's orchid bee, is a large-bodied bee species in the tribe Euglossini, otherwise known as the orchid bees. The species is a solitary bee and is native to tropical Central and South America. The male collects fragrances from orchid flowers, which it stores in hollows in its hind legs.
