Common Periwinkle

Le bigorneau, mot provençal probablement dérivé de bigorne (signifiant petite enclume à deux cornes en référence à son apparence), est, dans l'acception usuelle et notamment commerciale, le plus consommé des petits gastéropodes marins à coquille spiralée. Dans ce sens, il correspond à l'espèce Littorina littorea. Du fait de son importance économique, ce nom est compris et utilisé partout, y compris au Québec où il a fait l'objet d'une décision de normalisation par l'Office québécois de la langue française.

The common periwinkle or winkle (Littorina littorea) is a species of small whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc that has gills and an operculum, and is classified within the family Littorinidae, the periwinkles. This is a robust intertidal species with a dark and sometimes banded shell. It is native to the rocky shores of the northeastern, and introduced to the northwestern, Atlantic Ocean.

El bígaro común o caracolillo (Littorina littorea) es una especie de molusco gasterópodo de la familia Littorinidae. ​ Es comestible y consumida desde antiguo​ y considerada como especie pesquera admitida en España. ​ No se reconocen subespecies.
