The Mastigoteuthidae, also known as whip-lash squid, are a family of small deep-sea squid. Approximately 20 known species in six genera are represented, with members found in both the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zone of most oceans. Originally described by Verill in 1881, it was later lowered by Chun (1920) to a subfamily (Mastigoteuthinae) of the Chiroteuthidae.

El Bear Seamount es un guyot o volcán submarino de cumbre plana en el océano Atlántico norte. Es el más antiguo de los montes submarinos de Nueva Inglaterra, estuvo activo hace más de 100 millones de años. Se formó cuando la placa de América del Norte se desplazó sobre el punto caliente de Nueva Inglaterra.
