Taxonomy The tiny hawk was formally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1766 in the twelfth edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Falco superciliosus.

Se halla desde Nicaragua hasta el noroeste de América del Sur. Miden entre 28 y 32 cm, siendo la hembra mayor que el macho.
