Giant Siphonophore

Le siphonophore géant (Praya dubia) est un animal des profondeurs marines appartenant à l'ordre des siphonophores. Cet ordre fait partie de l'embranchement des cnidaires, un groupe d'invertébrés dont font également partie les méduses. Il a été rencontré dans les océans Atlantique, Indien et Pacifique entre 700 et 1 000 m de profondeur, voire à 600 mètres.

Praya dubia, the giant siphonophore, lives in the mesopelagic zone to bathypelagic zone at 700 m (2,300 ft) to 1,000 m (3,300 ft) below sea level. It has been found off the coasts around the world, from Iceland in the North Atlantic to Chile in the South Pacific. Praya dubia is a member of the order Siphonophorae within the class Hydrozoa.

María de los Ángeles Alvariño González, conocida como Ángeles Alvariño, (Serantes, Ferrol, La Coruña, 3 de octubre de 1916-La Jolla, San Diego, California, 29 de mayo de 2005) fue una oceanógrafa, zoóloga y profesora española precursora en la investigación oceanográfica mundial. En 1953-54 fue la primera mujer científica en un buque oceanográfico británico, el Sarsia. A partir de 1956 realizó sus investigaciones en Estados Unidos.
