Tres Marias raccoon

Les îles Tres Marías sont un archipel mexicain situé dans l’océan Pacifique, à 87 km au plus près des côtes de l’État du Nayarit. Depuis 1905, elles hébergent une colonie pénitentiaire, créée par Porfirio Díaz alors président du Mexique. Depuis 2005, les îles sont inscrites, avec d'autres îles du golfe de Californie, sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO et sont également classées depuis 2010 comme réserve de biosphère.

The Tres Marias raccoon (Procyon lotor insularis) is a subspecies of the common raccoon endemic to the two main islands of the Islas Marías, an archipelago off the western coast of the Mexican state of Nayarit. Although sometimes historically considered a separate species, the Tres Marias raccoon is now regarded to be a subspecies of the common raccoon, introduced to the Islas Marías in the recent past. It is slightly larger than the common raccoon and has a distinctive angular skull.

El mapache de Tres Marías (Procyon lotor insularis) es una de las subespecies de mapache común (Procyon lotor). Durante un tiempo fue considerada como una especie propia (Procyon insularis), aunque tras una serie de estudios morfológicos se adscribe de nuevo a la especie nominal. ​ Se encuentra muy amenazada, pues sólo se ha encontrado en el archipiélago de las Tres Marías, en el Pacífico mexicano.
