Siberian Flying Squirrel

Le terme Polatouche est un nom vernaculaire qui peut désigner en français plusieurs genres et espèces d’écureuils volants, des mammifères rongeurs de la famille des Sciuridés de la sous-famille des Pteromyinae. Ils se caractérisent notamment de formes plus grandes comme les Pétauristes par leur petite taille. Étymologie « Polatouche » vient du polonais polatucha signifiant « rondouillard à voile ».

The Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) is an Old World flying squirrel ranging from the Baltic Sea in the west, throughout Northern Asia to the coast of the Pacific Ocean in the east. It is the only species of flying squirrel in Europe and is considered vulnerable in the European Union where it occurs only in Estonia and Finland. In Latvia, it was last sighted in 2001 and has been considered to be locally extinct since 2013.

La ardilla voladora siberiana (Pteromys volans) es una especie de roedor esciuromorfo de la familia Sciuridae. Pertenece a la misma familia que las ardillas comunes, a las que, por otra parte, se parece tanto por su aspecto como por su modo de vida. Características Tiene el cuerpo bordeado lateralmente por un repliegue de piel cubierta de pelo, llamado patagio, situado entre los dos pares de miembros, que puede extenderse como si fuese un paracaídas, y que permite realizar vuelos planeados de hasta 35 m.
