Downlooker Snipefly

Rhagio scolopaceus, le leptis bécasse est une espèce d'insectes diptères brachycères, une (mouche) de la famille des Rhagionidae, mesurant entre 8 et 14 mm. Distribution Europe : de l'Espagne à la Scandinavie, à la Russie. Biologie Cette espèce fréquente les régions boisées, l'adulte, visible de mai à aout, se dispose souvent la tête en bas lorsqu'il se pose sur les troncs.

Rhagio scolopaceus is thought to be the most common species of fly from the family Rhagionidae, with key identification markers being the presence of dark spots or bands on the wings and the elongation of the third (final) antennal segment. Notable sexually dimorphic features exhibited are seen with the females having a broader frons, as well as clearly separate (dichoptic) compound eyes in contrast to the nearly conjoined (holoptic) eyes of the males. It is also known as the downlooker snipefly.
