Giant Phantom Jelly

Stygiomedusa gigantea est une espèce de méduses abyssales géantes de la famille des Ulmaridae (classe des Scyphozoa). Elle est parfois appelée « méduse fantôme géante » (en anglais « giant ghost jelly »). Systématique L'espèce Stygiomedusa gigantea a été décrite pour la première fois en 1900 par le zoologiste britannique Edward Thomas Browne (d) (1866-1937) sous le protonyme de Diplulmaris gigantea.

Stygiomedusa gigantea, commonly known as the giant phantom jelly, is the only known species in the monotypic genus of deep sea jellyfish, Stygiomedusa. It is in the Ulmaridae family. With only around 118 sightings in 110 years, it is a jellyfish that is rarely seen, but believed to be widespread throughout the world, with the exception of the Arctic Ocean.
