The antbirds are a large passerine bird family, Thamnophilidae, found across subtropical and tropical Central and South America, from Mexico to Argentina. There are more than 230 species, known variously as antshrikes, antwrens, antvireos, fire-eyes, bare-eyes and bushbirds. They are related to the antthrushes and antpittas (family Formicariidae), the tapaculos, the gnateaters and the ovenbirds.

Thamnophilus es un género de aves paseriformes perteneciente a la familia Thamnophilidae que agrupa a numerosas especies nativas de la América tropical (Neotrópico), cuyas áreas de distribución se encuentran desde el este de México, a través de América Central y del Sur hasta el norte de Argentina y Uruguay. ​ A sus miembros se les conoce popularmente como batarás,​ y también chocas u hormigueros. ​ Etimología El nombre genérico «Thamnophilus» se compone de las palabras del griego «θαμνος thamnos» que significa ‘arbusto’ y «φιλος philos» que significa ‘amante’.
