Orangeback Flying Squid

Sthenoteuthis pteropus, l’encornet dos orange, est une espèce de mollusque céphalopode de la famille des Ommastrephidae, un calmar qui vit dans l'océan Atlantique. Ceux-ci ont la faculté de se déplacer en pleine mer hors de l'eau en utilisant leurs nageoires et tentacules comme ailes et leur siphon comme propulseur, de même sans doute que d'autres espèces comme Dosidicus gigas et Illex illecebrosus, ainsi qu’Ommastrephes bartramii.

Sthenoteuthis pteropus, also known as the orangeback flying squid or orangeback squid, is a species of cephalopod in the family Ommastrephidae. It is native to tropical parts of the Atlantic Ocean where it is found to depths of about 200 m (656 ft). Description Like other squid, Sthenoteuthis pteropus is bilaterally symmetrical and has a head with a pair of eyes, eight arms and two tentacles and a fleshy, muscular body known as the mantle.

Los omastréfidos (Ommastrephidae)​ son una familia de moluscos cefalópodos del orden Teuthida, que se llaman comúnmente como pota. ​ Tienen una amplia distribución global y se pescan extensamente por ser usados como alimento. ​ Algunas especies de esta familia se conocen también por su vuelo a chorro, debido a esta característica se les llama también calamares volador.
