Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from vespoid wasp ancestors in the Cretaceous period. More than 13,800 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been described.

Juan Cristóbal Gundlach (Marburg, 17 de julio de 1810-La Habana, 14 de marzo de 1896), nacido Johannes Christoph Gundlach Redberg, fue un naturalista cubano, nacido en Alemania. Biografía Gundlach nació en Marburg an der Lahn, actual estado de Hessen. Se graduó en 1837 como Doctor en Filosofía en la Universidad de Marburgo, donde su padre era profesor de matemática y física.
