Kamehameha Butterfly

Vanessa tameamea est une espèce de lépidoptères de la famille des Nymphalidae, endémique d'Hawaï. Il a été déclaré insecte officiel de l'État d'Hawaï en 2009. Dénomination Eschscholtz décrit l'espèce en 1821 sous le protonyme de Pyrameis tameamea.

The Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) is one of the two species of butterfly endemic to Hawaii, the other is Udara blackburni. The Hawaiian name is pulelehua. This is today a catch-all native term for all butterflies; its origin seems to be pulelo "to float" or "to undulate in the air" + lehua, "reddish", or "rainbow colored", probably due to the predominant color of the Metrosideros polymorpha flower: an animal that floats through the air, from one lehua to another.

Vanessa es un género de lepidópteros ditrisios de la familia Nymphalidae. El nombre del género puede derivar del nombre de mujer. Aunque también se ha sugerido que es una variante de Phanessa, una palabra griega para una divinidad mística.
